Historic Toponas
Originally, Toponas was known as Upper Egeria Park.
There is a basalt rock formation east of the town on Highway 134, the Gore Highway, that resembles a sleeping lion.
The Ute Indian word meaning 'Sleeping Lion' is Toponas and thus the
town found it's name in the early 1880's. The Rock Creek Stage
Station/Gore Pass Stage Station was part of the first mail route
into the Yampa Valley. It remains standing and on the
National Register for Historic Properties.
Toponas Today
Situated
at the junction of Highways 131 and 134, Toponas is the
southeastern entrance to the Yampa
Valley. Located at an elevation of 8,271 feet, it is a small ranching community.
Over the past century
it has been noted for its fine cattle, premium quality hay, spinach and
lettuce production and timber. Some of the best fishing,
hunting, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling can be found in the
Routt National Forest surrounding Toponas. Amenities include a general
store, gas station, community hall, library and post office.
