The Town of Toponas, ColoradoHistoric Toponas
Originally, Toponas was known as Upper Egeria Park. There is a basalt rock formation east of the town on Highway 134, the Gore Highway, that resembles a sleeping lion. The Ute Indian word meaning 'Sleeping Lion' is Toponas and thus the town found it's name in the early 1880's. The Rock Creek Stage Station/Gore Pass Stage Station was part of the first mail route into the Yampa Valley. It remains standing and on the National Register for Historic Properties.
